When you watch a blockbuster action sequence where someone crashes through a window, takes a bottle to the head, or wields a stunt-safe weapon, chances are you are looking at the invisible craftsmanship of NewRuleFX. Since 1991, the company has been an industry leader in special effects fabrication, working behind the scenes for giants like Netflix, Disney, and Marvel, and outfitting productions from Game of Thrones to Only Murders in the Building and The Bear.
But on November 13, 2025, that invisible craftsmanship was put to the ultimate test when a devastating fire tore through NewRuleFX's workshop. The blaze destroyed much of their facility, equipment, and materials, including an irreplaceable collection of custom molds built over decades. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the loss was catastrophic for the independent fabrication studio.
However, in true Hollywood fashion, the story didn't end there. Today, under the leadership of President and Head Fabricator Ryan Johnson, NewRuleFX has relocated to a new facility. Remarkably, even while actively rebuilding their own workshop, Johnson and his team are still delivering large-scale, custom practical effects for their high-profile clients.
Darren Paltrowitz recently interviewed Ryan Johnson via Zoom to discuss his journey in the special effects industry, the impact of the devastating fire, and how he is leading his team to rebuild stronger than ever. They talked about his ethos as a creator, his belief that the best practical effects are the ones audiences never notice, and how he continues to push the boundaries of fabrication by combining old-school artistry with modern manufacturing.
